Mission & Vision

The Global Youth Alliance for Chinese Drama (GYACD) can be understood through its four components.

  • By “Youth Alliance,” we identify a “younger generation” as our target demographic to serve and support. This younger generation can be interpreted in various ways – it can refer to a person in the early stages of their life, or their study, practice, or career regardless of age. We recognize that these early stages are crucial and formative years of one’s scholarship, artistry, and understanding of the world in general. However, these early stages are also afflicted by a lack of direction, access, and resources.

  • By “Global,” we identify our enterprise and audience as transnational and cross-cultural. At the same time, we understand “theater” and “drama” in our age as inherently operating beyond national, cultural, and linguistic boundaries.

  • By “Chinese,” we specify that the form, theme, and/or language in the works that we support to be related to the “Chinese,” including speakers of Sinitic languages, residents of the Greater China region, and everyone who identifies with other diasporic Chinese communities. Therefore, we do not limit ourselves to works written only in Sinitic languages.

  • By “Drama,” we refer to both performances and texts of theatrical works.

We declare four core missions:

  • To support young Chinese drama enthusiasts and provide them with resources, opportunities, and a platform to showcase their work.

  • To connect young Chinese drama enthusiasts with educators, scholars, and practitioners.

  • To promote Chinese drama around the world.

  • To facilitate a scholarly understanding of Chinese drama, to deconstruct the traditional-modern and indigenous-western binary oppositions, and to encourage such scholarly endeavors to join forces with theatrical practices.
